vegetation

The project is accomplished in one of Khrushchev period districts of Vilnius. Photographs and video footage document a peculiar tradition to tenant communal spaces in multistoried apartment blocks with no longer wanted plants. No longer wanted in the private space of the occupant, the plants are put into communal space, along with discarded furniture, interior decorations. Children and smokers are the only ones who stay longer by the side of these plants. However, a certain attachment to objects is obvious. Instead of throwing them away, people use them to create a more pleasant environment in stairwell landings. Vegetation, not admiration is their fate from now on. The tradition is going out of fashion, as a western type of landings is introduced – unified colors, none, or very subtle décor is applied to communal spaces. Not only plants, but the tradition itself becomes marginal and outlived.
